Mandoon Estate has won more awards than any other boutique winery in Western Australia. Lucky for us, it’s right on the doorstep of Perth in the picturesque Swan Valley. James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion rates the winery 5 out of 5 stars, and at the time we’re writing this, they’ve picked up 72 gold medals since 2012. Their 2012 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and the 2011 Reserve Shiraz are standout award winners, which you must try if you get the chance.
The winery sits on a 13ha site in Caversham, which was tended by the Roe family for more than 160 years. The first Surveyor General of the Swan River colonies, John Septimus Roe, planted some of the Swan Valley’s first grape vines here in 1840. It was purchased by the Erceg family in 2008, who constructed a new restaurant, brewery, function centre and cellar door just in time for its first vintage in 2010, produced by head winemaker Ryan Sudano.
